md asked:

I have a high school gpa of 4.3 and a few bad grades last year, but have taken 12 AP’s and have an ACT of 30 and a comparable SAT. I have many many extracurriculars that are pretty unique. They are my selling point, but do my grades and tests scores put me out of the running? I have done research with a docotr, written a research paper and volunteerd, the whole deal to show my interest in what I like and I do stand within the middle 50% of those admitted to Duke, but is it enough?

  1. I think you seem like a good candidate for a highly selective school like Duke. You should stand a good chance of getting in.

  2. Your ACT is quite low; let me explain to you how admission works. The lower scores are reserved for athletes, legacies, and developmental students.
You will be an average Duke applicant; perhaps around 20-30% chance. (Which is similar to the admit rate)
